Do it in this order: check passport validity, apply for the visa, then buy tickets. Most first-trip problems come from reversing those steps — buying a non-refundable ticket before a visa decision, or discovering the passport has under six months of validity left.
How much passport validity do you need?
At least six months beyond your intended date of entry, for most destinations. This is the single most common reason a first trip collapses before it starts, and renewal in Bangladesh takes time you may not have.
Check the blank pages too. Several countries require two facing blank visa pages, and a passport that is technically valid but full will still cause a refusal.
What is the right order to do things in?
Passport first, visa second, tickets third, everything else after. Money and SIM cards can be sorted in the final week; the first three cannot.
- Confirm passport validity and blank pages
- Assemble visa documents and apply
- Hold a flight reservation for the application — do not buy yet
- Buy tickets once the visa is issued
- Book accommodation
- Arrange currency endorsement and a travel card
- Arrange a SIM or eSIM for the destination
- Photograph every document and store it somewhere you can reach offline
How should you carry money?
Bangladesh Bank permits a travel quota endorsed against your passport. Get the endorsement done properly — some embassies ask for evidence of it, and it is also what makes your card work abroad.
Carry some cash in a widely accepted currency for the first day, and do not rely on a single card. A card that gets blocked on the first foreign transaction is common enough to plan around.
What should you have ready at immigration?
Return ticket, accommodation confirmation, and enough of an answer about your trip to sound like the person your visa application described. Officers ask simple questions and are listening for consistency, not detail.
Keep documents accessible rather than buried in checked baggage — the questions come before you collect it.
Common questions
- How much passport validity do I need to travel internationally?
- Generally at least six months beyond your date of entry, plus blank visa pages. Some countries require two facing blank pages. Check the specific requirement for your destination before applying for a visa, not after.
- Should I book my flight before or after the visa?
- After. Use a flight reservation for the visa application, and buy the ticket once the visa is issued. Buying a non-refundable ticket first is the most expensive mistake first-time travellers make.
