Developed across 5.88 acres by wealthy merchant Govinda Ram Saha and his heirs throughout the nineteenth century, Baliati Palace ranks among the largest residential estates in Bangladesh. The complex features seven distinct multi-storied blocks containing about 200 rooms, enclosed by massive boundary walls and massive Corinthian-columned entrance gates. Behind the main mansions lie four large symmetrical ponds framed by stone ghats and iron lanterns, showcasing a fusion of classical European and traditional zamindari styles. The Department of Archaeology protects the compound and maintains a regional museum in the central block.
