Dayaram Ray, dewan to the Natore Raj, founded the Dighapatia dynasty in 1706, and Raja Pramadanath Roy rebuilt the palace following the 1897 earthquake in a neoclassical style influenced by European manors. The forty-acre walled estate features an imposing entrance gate with an imported British four-dial clock, landscaped lawns, marble statues of Greek gods, and a deer sanctuary. Since 1972 it has served as the government's official residence in northern Bangladesh for state functions. A museum wing displays vintage royal furniture, weapons, and historical photographs.
