Standing on the north embankment of the Padma river, Bara Kuthi was built by the Dutch East India Company in the 1700s as a silk and indigo trade factory before passing to the British East India Company in 1833. The two-storied brick building later served as an administrative office and residence, surviving several historic earthquakes and Padma river floods.
