Completed in 1908 by the 20th-century landlord Maharaja Kumar Gopal Lal Roy, Tajhat Palace ranks among northern Bengal's most impressive historic residences. The two-story white structure extends roughly 213 meters wide, fronted by a grand flight of imported Italian marble stairs leading to a classical U-shaped portico crowned by a ribbed central dome. Today it functions as the Rangpur Museum under the Department of Archaeology, preserving 10th- to 11th-century black basalt sculptures of Vishnu and Shiva, ancient terracotta plaques from Paharpur and Mahasthangarh, and Sanskrit and Arabic manuscripts including an a Quran transcription associated with Emperor Aurangzeb.
