Mawa was for decades the primary ferry crossing point between Dhaka and the southern districts before the opening of the Padma Bridge. Today the riverbank remains a popular stop for travellers who gather at the open-air fish market to pick fresh hilsa and have it fried immediately. Small wooden boats can be hired along the bank for excursions onto the Padma river. Evenings bring cool river breezes and views of the steel bridge spans stretching to the far bank.
