Flowing along the Chitra and Nabaganga riverbeds, Narail is an intimate cultural district forever marked by painter S. M. Sultan's large-scale art. Travellers cross to Machimdia on the river's western bank to visit Sultan's grave, studio and Shishu Swarga children's academy, or explore quiet villages where fishermen still use trained otters to herd river fish. Since the opening of the Padma and Kalna bridges, the town has become one of the quickest southern getaways from Dhaka.
