Gopalganj occupies a flat, low-lying expanse of the delta between the Madhumati and the Ghagar rivers, criss-crossed by tidal canals and freshwater beels. The district is celebrated nationwide as the home soil and resting place of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and pilgrims gather in thousands at Orakandi for the annual Matua festivals. The opening of the Padma Bridge linked it directly to Dhaka in less than three hours.
