This pilgrimage complex in Kashiani was founded by the 19th-century social reformer Harichand Thakur, whose teachings inspired the egalitarian Matua faith among Bengal's oppressed communities. At the heart of the estate stand sacred temples and two large ponds, Kamna Sagar and Dudhsagar, where devotees take ceremonial ablutions. In spring, during the Baruni Snan festival in March or April, over a million pilgrims travel here from across Bangladesh and eastern India to sing kirtans and bathe in the holy water. Outside the festival week, the shaded village compound is deeply quiet.

How to get to Orakandi Thakur Bari
In Kashiani upazila, about 28 km north of Gopalganj. Buses towards Muksudpur or Bhatiapara drop at Kashiani junction, followed by a 15-minute auto-rickshaw to Orakandi.
