Panam Nagar developed in the 19th century as a prosperous residential enclave for Hindu cloth merchants who traded English cotton and local muslins. A single narrow paved lane roughly 600 metres long is lined with 52 grand brick houses that blend European neoclassical pediments, cast-iron railings and Indo-Saracenic arches. Many residences back onto canals once used for boat transport. Arrive early on a weekday morning to explore the facades without tour groups.
