Local schoolteacher Hanif Pathan and his son Habibullah Pathan first collected ancient artifacts here in the 1930s, leading to extensive academic excavations in the 2000s. Digs revealed a fortified citadel with ramparts, brick roadways, pit-dwellings, silver punch-marked coins and thousands of semi-precious stone beads. The finds indicate this riverine site traded with Rome and Southeast Asia as part of the maritime Silk Road. An on-site interpretation centre exhibits excavated potsherds and geological layers.
