In January 1947, Mahatma Gandhi walked across rural Noakhali for over a month to calm communal tensions and preach peace between local communities. Inspired by his mission, local barrister Hemanta Kumar Ghosh donated his ancestral estate in Jayag village to establish a permanent charitable trust. The grounds now house a memorial museum showcasing original photographs, personal correspondence, and the spinning wheels used during his stay, alongside vocational weaving centers. Stroll the quiet shaded lawns and fishponds behind the main two-storey brick residence.

How to get to Gandhi Ashram
About 25 km north-west of Maijdee Court in Jayag village, Sonaimuri. Take a bus or CNG from Maijdee to Sonaimuri bazaar, then a rickshaw or auto to Jayag in about 45 minutes.
Noakhali town is about 165 km from Dhaka, around 4.5 hours by road. Every way to get there is in the Noakhali guide.
The museum exhibition rooms are closed on Mondays and national public holidays.
