Rakhine families settled this coastal belt in the late 18th century after fleeing Arakan, clearing dense tidal jungle to build villages. Their homesteads feature distinct timber houses raised on wooden stilts, shaded by coconut palms and betel trees. Small wooden Buddhist monasteries preserve brass Buddha images, while weavers operate handlooms beneath their houses making colourful lungis and shawls. Ask polite permission before photographing weavers at work or stepping into monastery grounds.
