For decades trains from Dhaka connected to northern districts via a rail-ferry service that docked at Balashi Ghat, until declining river depths and the Jamuna bridge shifted the route. Today the embankment is a popular gathering place where visitors watch the sunset across the vast river and hire country wooden boats out to the sandy chars. In dry winter months, seasonal farming and herds of cattle take over the sandbanks, while the monsoon turns the Jamuna into an inland sea.
