Local tradition associates this high archaeological mound in Rajahar with King Virata of Mahabharata legend, though scholars date the structural layers to early medieval Bengal. Systematic excavations by the archaeology department have uncovered ancient brick walls, ornate terracotta plaques and black stone pillar bases of what was once an extensive fortified settlement. Each Baishakh a traditional pilgrimage fair brings villagers from around the region to the mound. The site remains quiet and uncommercialized throughout the rest of the year.
