Hazrat Shah Jamal arrived from Yemen in the late 16th century during the reign of Emperor Akbar to spread Islam along the Brahmaputra. The shrine complex, rebuilt with modern mosaic work, stands on high ground by the old riverbed and includes his mazar, a mosque, and an old pond. Devotees visit throughout the year, with a large annual urs held in late spring. Dress modestly and remove footwear before entering the inner sanctum.
