Engineered by Sir Robert William Gales and named after Viceroy Lord Hardinge, this 16-span steel bridge opened in March 1915 to link south-western Bengal to the northern railway network. Damaged during the 1971 Liberation War, it was quickly repaired and remains an engineering triumph, now running parallel to the modern Lalon Shah road bridge. Visitors stroll the embankment at Bheramara to watch passenger trains roar across the trusses at sunset. Small wooden boats offer rides on the Padma beneath the piers.
