Popular accounts attribute this massive reservoir in Gorgram to Raja Virat of the Mahabharata era, who dug it to water thousands of cattle, though archaeological evidence dates the tank to the early medieval period. Renamed Nilsagar in 1979 after the district, the waterbody covers over fifty acres and is ringed by high earthen embankments planted with mahogany, teak and coconut trees. A Hindu temple stands on the eastern bank while an ancient Sufi shrine occupies the western side. Each winter thousands of migratory ducks and teals roost across its quiet surface.
