Covering more than one hundred acres, the Saidpur workshop was built by the British colonial administration in 1870 to maintain locomotives, passenger coaches and heavy machinery across the northern railway grid. Its cavernous brick sheds, overhead gantry cranes and historic carriage repair tracks preserve the industrial heritage of 19th-century rail transport. The surrounding railway settlement still retains colonial-era bungalows, brick officers' clubs and shaded avenues. Viewing the workshop grounds from outside gives a rare sense of Bengal's steam-age engineering history.
