Eastern Bengal Railway opened this station in 1871 as part of the Calcutta to Goalando main line. The railway yard retains its red-brick colonial station building, Victorian wrought-iron pillars and a large locomotive carriage shed. Railway buffs can view old hand-operated points, a classic locomotive turntable and colonial-era staff quarters scattered along the tracks. The station concourse remains an atmospheric hub where tea vendors call out to passengers passing between north and south Bengal.
