Created in 1962 following the completion of the Karnaphuli Hydroelectric Dam, this expansive reservoir covers hundreds of square kilometers across submerged mountain valleys. Motorized wooden longboats ferry passengers between isolated hill settlements, floating fruit markets, and quiet lakeside dining huts. The lake waters change from deep indigo in the dry winter months to silted jade during the monsoon downpours. Hire an engine boat from Reserve Bazar ghat for an open cruise, and always insist on wearing a life jacket.
