Arriving from Yemen via Delhi in 1303, the Sufi saint Shah Jalal and his companions settled in Sylhet and transformed the cultural and spiritual life of the region. The walled dargah complex features his white-domed tomb chamber, an open prayer courtyard, and an ancient stone pond filled with sacred catfish (gajar mach). Flocks of blue rock pigeons, locally called Jalali kobutor, nest in the eaves and feed in the central square. Dress conservatively, remove shoes before entering the inner sanctum, and visit after evening prayers when oil lamps light up the walkways.
