Ratargul is one of the few freshwater swamp forests in Bangladesh, submerged under two to four metres of water during the summer monsoon from Gowain River overflows. Visitors board small, paddle-powered wooden boats at the forest landing ghat to navigate silent tree-canopied waterways populated by monkeys, monitor lizards, and water birds. A concrete observation tower rising above the tree canopy offers views across the flooded woodland toward the Meghalaya hills. Visit between July and September for peak water levels, and rent an engine-free dinghy to reduce noise.

How to get to Ratargul Swamp Forest
About 26 km north-east of Sylhet city in Gowainghat. A hired CNG auto-rickshaw takes about 1 hour to reach the boat landing ghat at Chowringhee or Majerghat.
Sylhet town is about 240 km from Dhaka, around 5.5 hours by road. Every way to get there is in the Sylhet guide.
Water recedes almost completely by January; dry-season visits require walking through mud instead of boating.
