Sylhet is the economic and spiritual center of the north-east, anchored by the revered fourteenth-century shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal. Just beyond the urban core, the landscape unfolds into flooded freshwater swamp forests at Ratargul, crystal-clear mountain streams at Lalakhal, and limestone riverbeds strewn with white pebbles along the Meghalaya border. It serves as the primary regional transit hub with daily flights and express trains from Dhaka.
