Sunamganj occupies the sprawling floodplain basin at the foot of India's Meghalaya plateau. During the summer monsoon from June to September, the district turns into an inland sea where overnight houseboats cruise the Ramsar-protected waters of Tanguar Haor. In winter the floodwaters recede to expose white sandbars on the Jadukata River, bright crimson shimul blossoms, and thousands of migratory ducks.
