Built at Doani in Hatibandha between 1979 and 1990, this massive concrete barrage controls water flow from the mighty Teesta River to irrigate hundreds of thousands of hectares across northern districts. Forty-four sluice gates span the wide river channel, flanked by high flood embankments, canal headworks and wide views across the water towards the Indian border hills. Winter afternoons draw visitors who walk along the barrage embankment, watch fishermen casting throw-nets, and sample fresh river fish at small road stalls.
