Lalmonirhat stretches along a narrow finger of north-western border country between the Teesta and Dharla rivers. The district is defined by its historic role as a major railway junction, its frontier enclaves including Dahagram, and the massive floodgates of the Teesta Barrage. Farmland planted with maize, ginger and tobacco separates the towns, with quiet archaeological sites tucked into the countryside.
