Originating in the Garo Hills of India, the Someshwari flows into Bangladesh at Durgapur with unusually clear, cool water flowing over beds of sand and rounded gravel. During winter the river contracts into shallow braided channels, and local labourers wade into the current with net strainers to extract coal fragments washed down from upstream mines. Visitors cross the river by country boat or temporary bamboo walkways to reach Bijoypur. In the dry months, walking barefoot across the smooth sand flats is a classic Durgapur experience.
