Scholars identify Bhitorgarh as one of the largest fortified city sites in South Asia, established around the 6th century along ancient overland trade routes between Tibet, Assam and Bengal. Built under King Prithu, the settlement was defended by four concentric tiers of ramparts constructed from granite boulders and kiln-fired bricks. Archaeological digs have uncovered temple foundations, ancient residential blocks, and Maharaja Dighi, an expansive reservoir dug within the inner fort. Walking through the farmland today reveals remnants of stone foundations protruding through village paths.
