From the grounds of the colonial-era Tetulia Dak Bungalow perched on the high bank of the Mahananda River, visitors look straight across the Indian border into the Himalayan foothills. On cloudless mornings from mid-October to late November, the gleaming white mass of Mount Kanchenjunga rises above the horizon, bathed in pink dawn light. Below the viewpoint, local laborers wade through the shallow river waters collecting gravel and sand washed down from mountain streams. Arrive before sunrise with warm clothing and binoculars for the clearest mountain views.
