Maharaja Suryakanta Acharya Chowdhury first built a palace here in the late 19th century, but the 1897 Assam earthquake destroyed it. His adopted son, Shashikanta Acharya Chowdhury, rebuilt this grand European-style mansion between 1905 and 1911 across nine acres. The single-storey brick palace features classical Corinthian columns, a central ballroom with imported chandeliers, and a marble Venus statue standing inside a lotus pond out front. The Department of Archaeology now preserves the property as a regional museum.
