Naogaon lies across the red clay undulating ridges of the Barind tract, bordered by India on its northern and western edges. The district contains Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur, one of the greatest Buddhist monastic cities of ancient Asia, alongside 16th-century stone mosques and Tagore's riverside estate at Patisar. It is also the foremost rice-milling center of Bangladesh, processing aromatic chinigura and fine kataribhog grains from the surrounding plains.
