King Ramapala founded this monastic university in the late 11th century as one of the last great centers of Mahayana Buddhist learning in Bengal. Tibetan texts record that famous scholars, including the translator Vibhutichandra, lived and worked here translating Buddhist manuscripts before foreign invasions scattered them. Excavations in the 1990s uncovered an extensive brick monastery with monk cells, stone pillars, terracotta plaques and Buddha sculptures now housed at Paharpur museum. The quiet earthen ruins sit among fields near the Indian border.
