Pala emperor Dharmapala founded this monastic city around 781 CE, naming it Somapura Mahavihara. A square compound measuring about 300 metres on each side holds 177 monks' cells facing a central courtyard, where a terraced brick temple rises over twenty metres. Excavations revealed thousands of terracotta plaques fixed to the temple walls depicting people, animals and deities from early medieval Bengal. The adjacent site museum displays stone sculptures, bronze figures and recovered inscriptions.
