Established in 1962, this eighty-four-square-kilometre sanctuary preserves a remnant tract of the ancient deciduous sal forests that once covered central Bengal. Tall straight-trunked sal trees rise over red laterite soil, sheltering troops of capped langurs, barking deer, wild boars and numerous resident bird species. The forest is also the ancestral home of indigenous Mandi (Garo) and Koch communities who cultivate pineapples and ginger along forest clearings. Forest trails lead to feeding points where rhesus monkeys gather in the mornings.
