Bordering West Bengal along the meandering Bhairab and Kazla rivers, Meherpur is best known as the birthplace of the nation's wartime provisional government. In the mango grove of Baidyanathtala, now Mujibnagar, ministers took their historic oath of office in April 1971 beneath the trees. Beyond the national monument, travellers find nineteenth-century indigo factory mansions and confectioners handcrafting milk sweets from recipes passed down since the 1860s.
